In November 2020 I participated in an Australia-Japan-India trilateral hosted by the Griffith Asia Institute in partnership with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which addressed the topic of ‘Strategic dynamics of the Indo-Pacific in a post-Covid world’. GAI subsequently published some of my reflections as part of their Griffith Asia Insights blog.
My post examined the future of multilateralism in Asia and addressed the question of whether the world has truly entered a “post-Alliance era” dominated by flexible, ad hoc coalitions, or if traditional, formal partnerships will still have a significant role to play.
In doing so, I considered examples including the Five Power Defence Arrangements and the Quad to demonstrate how both established, and emerging, multilateral institutions can have a positive and enduring impact on regional security.
