The Conversation: “Australia is investigating whether ex-defence personnel provided military training to China. Would it matter if they did?”

Earlier this month I had my first piece published with The Conversation, which analysed the circumstances surrounding the announcement by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles that he had commissioned an investigation into whether ex-Australian Defence Force pilots had provided training to China’s People’s Liberation Army.

The British Ministry of Defence announced in October that around 30 of their former pilots had delivered training to the People’s Liberation Army via a company based in South Africa. This triggered initial inquiries in Australia and the United States to see whether any of their former personnel had been involved in similar activities. None of the British pilots were found to have broken the law, but these revelations did raise questions of whether such activities ought to be permitted, and what harm they may have caused to our respective countries’ national security.
